The Last Yiddish Speaker by Deborah Zoe Laufer
In 2023, The Last Parade, by Stephanie Satie presented a realist drama, a history of the Jewish Diaspora in reaction to the Ukrainian-Russian War. The Immigration system, the attraction of America, and emotional reaction to the state of being during war time was multiplying emotions on the Russian invasion into Ukraine. In the 24-25 Season InterAct Theater presented The Last Yiddish Speaker, the ancestral, or inherited spirit, of Jewish people living under oppressive circumstances. Chava is played by Satie, in the spirit of the play she leaves us with uncertainty. Was Chava a real character, or simply, a ghost? The suggestive figure of Chava was of one traveling like refugees in exile, and her shadow was like the traditions of Yiddish folklore following its children into modernism.
